A really cool moment and in general, nicely wrought. However, you absolutely butcher the collective nouns singular vs plural rules, and you mix present and past tense (see blog post before this last one for my rant on that). Also a couple of typos, with “down” for both “dawn” and “town”.

Great idea and feel, just needs some editing polish.

I write regularly in a journal, and imagining the rain soaking its pages is borderline nightmare to me, much less living the last moments of my life.

Looks like you meant to say “see the light of a distant town.”
