Lovely moment here. I like the feel and the descriptions. In my head the character is actually at or past middle age as they have this epiphany, but maybe that’s just my imagination.

If I were going to nitpick anything, I don’t know if you can have 3 sentences strung together with semi-colons. Seems like it might work just as well as separate sentences (second paragraph).

The hair waving goodbye was a neat visual as well, as it was a nice way to highlight that they weren’t waving with a hand.

I absolutely love lines like this: I sat and stared at the nothingness I wanted to see.

Is this a mid-life crisis averted or created? I can’t help but wonder what or who were left behind.

@THX semicolons are super commas, and here I wanted to use them to string my analogies together. *shrug * I don’t have my English Grammar text right here in front of me..

I realize that the joints creaking are what make you all think of middle age. :) Sometimes if we sit for long periods of time, we all creak. Or I’m just getting old..
