Reminds me of the poem The Ball Turret Gunner. Also brings up the question of moral responsibility. You are killing civilians as well as soldiers for your country…

That reasoning makes the killing ok, but you’re just a kid dropping fire on other kids for unclear reasons.

I really liked the ‘in the moment’ parts, in the mind of the pilot. Those guys really were flying by the seat of their pants on a wing and a prayer.

Definitely appreciated the final sentiment as well.

And yes, we get all squeamish today about incidental damage, but WWII was absolutely brutal, all poor accuracy and mass bombing.
