I read this in the voice of my father. He allowed us to have animals but he viewed them as another mouth to feed. I had a cat, that specifically paid more attention to my father because my father ignored her.

And now I have to write about it.

You set the scene very well, the grudging care of a pet that isn’t totally wanted. Sad at the end that trying to do the right thing is too late.
