Haha. Go Rebecca! I love the insult “your dad is a greasy coon,” gotta say I’ve never heard that one before. This was cute, I like the entries to this challenge that are playground stories. After all, so much elementary school drama does happen there… great job!
@someday – Rebecca is my 10 yr old daughter and she has been bullied because she is mixed race. Unfortunately she is more the type to cry to me and dad than sock her tormentors in the nose :-(
I was trying to find a racial slur that wasn’t too awful and that one is kinda old.
Having lived in the South, I knew ‘coon’ as soon as I read it. That detail really gave the story some depth and setting, all in one nasty little word. Nice little story, and I liked hearing the background personal stuff. I think we all hope/wish for our kids to be strong, to be able to stand up for themselves.
Congrats on being featured, it only took 3 months to get noticed :)
I love the heroine characters who can reinvent themselves due to the adversity they face. (Scarlett O’hara, Cordelia Naismith), and Rebecca is a character I could love, especially give Bobby his comeuppance. I did find this ficly a bit on the ‘average’ side, and somewhat lackluster. I feel you tried hard to create the twist that it was a girl who socked Bobby, that the story ended up falling short in other areas.
