Was this inspired by the recent tornadoes in the US? I was interested to read about the Facebook groups where people photograph scattered relics in the hopes that their owners will find them. It’s nice to see some of the world’s enchanted objects discussed and explored.
Yes and no. :) I’m not that good at writing old westerns, and the badge certainly alludes to a historic retelling of some western treachery that ends with the badge in the possession of either his grandfather or a victim of that tornado. The blowing page of photos ties into the recent events, as well as provides a sense of lonliness and is reminiscent of a tumbleweed.
Google searching says you can purchase replica badges rather cheaply, but originals, all shined up in mint condition, can be worth 300-900 dollars depending on type, age, metal, etc. A possible sequel could include the badge having unusual significance to magical creatures, time travelers, or just a unique history. Ideas are bouncing around my head, but nothing is sticking. Feel free to add on!
