I like this! It kind of reminds me of a book series by Holly Black. A black, ominous sort of faery tale. Nicely done.

I’m a sucker for mashups and this is a good one. The barrage of similes in the second paragraph is not only great but credibly Anglo-Saxon as well.

eventually some fell beast will shatter it only to have it plunged into its own heart minutes later

The conclusion made me grin, but I can’t help but feel the body is a bit over-done. If it weren’t, though, I wonder if it wouldn’t be similar enough to the source.

Too many people try to reference things without really knowing them. You haven’t done that, and that’s something to be proud of.
