I had forgotten that the Conservatory had already been established. That does add a new angle to things.

The mourner that doesn’t self destruct always eventually discards their black robes and blacker sentiments for lighter fare.

Great sense of atmosphere and mood, it conjures a really vivid image that sticks in my imagination.

This is wonderful as a standalone thing, which is all I’m prepared to view it as- the unchallenge it was submitted into is far too great for me to penetrate at this point.

Also, I hate to be “that guy” but if the arms of the statue are cut off, how can you tell the hands were cut off as well?

I think the phrase ‘still her grief’ is a powerful one.

This is an excellent story. It gave me chills, though I should add that I am standing under some air conditioning. Still, it’s an excellent story, full of great description and mood.
