Very well done. I like the interview style. My only issue is the opening sentence makes it seem like an audio interview, but VF is a print magazine. Probably the most succinct and effective way of setting the stage, but I would have preferred a more traditional print style opening. Just my biased opinion though.
I also like that you compare the ridiculousness of believing in a god with the ridiculousness of believing in something way more awesome, like dragons. Excuse me, Dragons. But that again is a biased opinion. I’d imagine believers of Dragons wouldn’t appreciate you comparing them to something imaginary and so innately evil as Yahweh.
For some reason reminds me of a great quote by Sam Harris: “The president of the United States has claimed, on more than one occasion, to be in dialogue with God. If he said that he was talking to God through his hairdryer, this would precipitate a national emergency. I fail to see how the addition of a hairdryer makes the claim more ridiculous or offensive.”
Funny you mention Harris. I just finished “The End of Faith” the a couple weeks ago and that whole portion about Presidential candidates not having to pass any public test other than the one the Constitution specifically prohibits (religious view) to be a key takeaway.
Thanks for the compliment on the piece though. I had a whole different intro, but the piece went about 300 characters over, so I had to get out the big scissors and trim some stuff I didn’t want to.
I like it—a nice little lampoon of religiosity and our preoccupation with it in spheres where it holds less bearing. We’re a funny people that way, and satire is always a nice way of holding a mirror up to our absurdities.
