The Quarry part 2
Nothing happened. The object lay still, at the edge of the pool which filled the bottom of the quarry.
He poked it again.
“Careful, Adam, you know she’ll kill us if you fall in.â€
Adam bent over the object. It was round and shiny, reminded him of a conker.
He poked it a third time. It rolled towards the water, came to rest at the edge of the pool.
“It’s nothing,†Adam turned to face Luke, “just a piece of junk.â€
“It’s humming though, can’t you hear it?â€
“It’s not humming.â€
“Shhhh, listen.â€
The boys stood in silence. Adam turned his ear towards the object.
“It’s not humming,†he said.
“It is.â€
“I told you, it’s just a piece of junk.â€
Adam kicked it. It was lighter than he thought it would be and landed in the centre of the pool.
“Come on, we better go.â€
Adam scrambled up the side of the quarry. He could hear Luke behind him, knew he’d be fighting his way through the mud and stones Adam dislodged.
He pulled himself over the top of the quarry and looked down. The water in the pool was bubbling.
