“Don’t do it,” he breathed from behind her. “…please. You don’t know what you’re doing.”

“What, you’re actually worried about me?” She laughed, sliding the handgun out from the waistband of her pants. “Come with me then.” She raised her arm behind her, dangling the gun between two fingers.

“It isn’t allowed.”

Flipping the gun above her head and catching it, she looked back at him, grinning sardonically. “Oh, right, because that’s mattered so much to you before.”

His mouth tightened into a thin line. “That was a long time ago—”

“—And things have changed, yes. Your royal father is fond of that one.” She put one foot up on the ledge, leaning over to stare at the water below. “I suppose you’ll repeat it just as mindlessly when you take the job.”

She heard a long sigh, and then the gravel of the rooftop crunch as he stepped forward to grab the pistol from her. “You’ll get us killed, you know, Anat.”

“Who knows, Kephas? We do this right, and we might just be the first heroes to actually come back home.”
