The second italicized line from the mother made me think “Take my love, take my land, take me to where I cannot stand, I don’t care, I’m still free, you can’t take the sky from me…”

@Robert, as much as I like Firefly, I can’t stand that song. Anyway, while the writing is really good, I think I’m kind of missing what’s going on. From what I can tell, though, it’s really intense and interesting.
