This describes dreaming very well. What realization dawns? That this is the anguish of things unreachable? I can tell you are a poet, because this is lyrical, metaphorical, and so full of commas I get lost amid the fragments. :)

“Realization dawns” can be referred to anything as you will- like you said, this piece if very metaphorical, and it’s symbolism all depends on the person reading it. However, what I, myself, was referring it to is the realization of a mental state, good or bad, or even an event that has taken place, either present or prior… if that makes any sense, heh.
Ah, and sorry about that- believe me, there would have been a thousand or more commas, if I had the space!
