I love the continuation. One picky thing… “they ’uns” just doesn’t flow right to me, even in context of the dialect. Not totally sure of fix… it just seemed a little awkward.

So perhaps the bird is the magical one, or perhaps he just discovered this special talent because this was the first bird to get near him. Either way, the talking can’t be in his own head or it would be less intelligently spoken.
