I see a world where this is common place, the wolves learned how to remove their proximity bracelets.
I read an article years ago about Ostriches. Two females, each with 15 to 20 chicks, simply crossed paths. The mothers fought and the chicks instinctively knew to follow the winner. One was left with none, the other doubled her brood.
In your story I see a human mother leaving her child long enough and far enough away for a female wolf to answer and tend to a young child’s wailing.
