I like the truth in this, the small things that mean more than they really should, and how she rejects him more subtly than he rejects her.
Actually, I interpreted this in two ways: one, that at first he chases after her, then she after him; second, that there are two completely separate pairs, two unrequited loves, and it’s all fair for them all, no matter how unfair it seems. I’m pretty sure you meant for the former interpretation, but either way I enjoyed this :)
I felt like it was one girl, in an unhappy relationship, lusting after and actively courting someone who feels nothing for her. It’s a sad love triangle that happens too much. There should be more happiness in this world. In both situaions however, the protagonist is in the wrong. It’s a sad, sad, all too common story.
I saw it as the same situation, same couple…and to begin with he does everything for her but she plays it cool because she’s not sure how she feels, and then when he gets tired of her acting like that, she realises that she loves him but it’s too late =(.
Anyway…the rhythm wasn’t perfect but I don’t really care because it was such a beautiful story (by any interpretation). I loved the spacing, and the repetitive format – I kind of would have liked it if you had kept the line starting of “he” right up to the end. Like: “he loves me not, but I keep on loving him.”
From the title I take it that you are comparing love to a battle, a struggle, which can never be truly won or settled. Very sad, but beautiful too. Abby x
