My mistake

The human Rae rode along in battered silence, coursing along every back alley, drainage ditch, and dirt path she could find. Her mechanical steed said little.

The human Violet meanwhile took a direct route towards home, intent on reclaiming what normalcy there might be left in this life.

The world spiraled out of control, a dark miasma of treachery, apathy, greed and moral ambivalence.

By dawn, the attempt on the school would be top on the newsfeed. With the sun’s rising would come fresh hope for some. Light could save them all. As the great glowing orb crept over a dingy horizon Rae stood astride her mech scooter on the lip of Crenshaw Gorge outside the city.

“Violet has returned to her residence.” The mech’s voice sounded weak, especially tinny.

Rae did not answer.

“We could return there in 23 point 57 minutes.”

Rae did not answer, only stared into the gaping chasm in the earth.

“Your stated objective was survival.”

Rae took a bracing breath, spat into the trampled pine needles, “My mistake.”
