You feel far away from me sometimes [poem]
You feel far away from me sometimes even when
You are close.
Your eyelashes flutter against my cheek
My heart stutters every time you speak.
I struggle to unravel the meaning of your words,
But the truth gets tangled up in the sticky threads
Of translation and intention.
So I stare into the dark waters of your eyes,
Trying to submerge myself in your gaze,
Trying to uncover answers
But still I can’t tell what you are thinking.
I feel close to you sometimes even when
I am far.
Your voice on the line, traveling over wire—
My cold heart thawed by the force of your fire.
I struggle to retain my self control,
But my heart gets tangled up in the sticky embrace
Of sensation and sentiment.
So I wrap myself around you tight,
Trying to connect myself to you,
Trying to become one—
But still in the morning I always wake alone.
