Decus et Tutamen
’I’ve got a present for you!’
‘What is it?’
’I’ve built you a city. Look!’
As Martin pulled the thick curtains apart, James squinted and lifted his arm to protect his eyes from any stray sun rays. As he adjusted to the sunlight he glanced in the direction Martin was pointing. ‘Not again,’ he thought.
‘Martin, listen-’
’It’s magnificent, isn’t it? And the obelisk, did you see the obelisk?’
James looked through the window as he tried to gather his thoughts. What he wanted to see was a gleaming obelisk with a radiant golden pinnacle, a solid and awe-inspiring monument of their love. The cold reality of the situation was that he was looking at an empty field.
James plucked up his courage. ‘Martin, listen,’ he began. ‘I love you, I really do but you’ve got to stop this. There is no city and certainly no obelisk! There is nothing out there! Nothing!’
’It’s alright James ’ Martin replied matter-of-factly. ‘One day, when you’re back to your normal self, I’ll take you to the obelisk. It’s beautiful.’
