Freefall

The cliff on the side of the mountain was large. Large enough that Jack had time to regret the decision to jump off. Large enough that adrenaline had time to set in and release his bowels.

Most importantly, the façade of the mountain was large enough that Jack could free fall to the velocity necessary so the device would not detonate the matter around it.

He hoped the timer counting down to the portal would be reached before his small organic body smashed into the rocks below.

He hoped this counter intuitive decision wasn’t the last one of his life.

As Jack watched the jagged rocks rise up towards him, from the ground beneath, his vision blurred. The air ripped past him at a tremendous speed as he closed his eyes.

A perfectly rational and maudlin thought entered his head: this is the end Jack.

At this point his heart was beating out of his chest. Fear of death arose in his lungs as he screamed a raucous bellow.

The last thing he remembered was a brilliant blue light all around him. It was warm.
