In Between Minds: A Dangerous Place

“That wasn’t a test, was it?” I asked. “Not part of the training?”

Grandmother cleared her throat but answered with her mind instead. Yes and no. That memory came from inside you. It is yours. The exercises helped uncover it but it’s very real.

My heart fluttered with a surge of happiness- my daughter was truly alive and, by the look of things, doing well! Guilt rode behind that momentary joy as a realization struck. I must have abandoned my daughter during the Exodus. I had left her in there, left and forgotten her.

A thought hit me harder than any psychic attack I had ever suffered though and brought tears to my eyes.

I was a terrible mother.

Grandmother exhaled and patted my arm softly. This is only the beginning, one key to a single door. I sense that there is much more where that came from. You have work ahead of you.

I shook my head violently. No, I will not leave my daughter to those butchers! I escaped for a reason. If you won’t help me- I paused shaking with anger, unable to continue.
