Yeah, that was something I worried would happen. I was banking on the contrast between the character’s voices to inform the reader, but I suppose it wasn’t as apparent on paper as it was in my head.
I kept coming back again and again to this story. I think it exemplifies the 1st Law very well. It’s an observance of the law in which the speechwriter’s has already attained some measure of power in having achieved a role with some influence over a somewhat simple president.
The protagonist obviously is making the President comfortable. Both are engaged in constructing a grand public facade, but the protagonist is far too clever to reveal the puppet’s strings too clearly.
Nowhere to go but up! There are positions of even more influence than speechwriting!
However, a good speechwriter would know that it should be my advisors and me. This president makes the same mistake immediately before that, but I expect it from him.
