To Jacob

Outside looking in
it’s hard to know how to feel.
My grief is small, insignificant,
hardly worth mentioning or sharing
yet sharing is all I want to do.

I need to feel connected to a larger whole
even as you feel all alone.
I have no place in your pain
even as I push my way in.

Tomorrow I’ll start to move on
tell your story as others ask
while you struggle to find words at all.

I’m sorry for your pain
and my need to be included in it.
