Letting Go
“Promise me one thing, Thom. Promise you won’t judge me,” Katherine’s voice was sincere. She was a good actresses, I give her that, but I don’t know why I stayed to listen when I should have walked away. I didn’t owe her anything.
“Katherine, look—” I began, but she rose her hand, signaling me to stop. She wanted no interruptions. Typical Katherine, even when apologizing she needed all eyes on her.
“Thom. You were right, Howie was a bad guy for me. And you know how hard it is for me to admit that, but… but there’s something else. One of the reasons why I’m… I’m not going to break up with him is because I’m carrying his child,” Katherine looked me straight in the eye. My heart dropped and my knees went weak.
“One of the reasons?” I surprised myself by asking.
“He says he’s changed. He realized how much he loved me because…” I stopped listening and just walked away mid sentence. I finally had to let go of Katherine that day.
Three days later Howie strangled her to death.
I felt no remorse.
