Great challenge entry. It sums up so much about the sadness of this narrator’s life, and even has a hint of mystery since it could be taken as a post-mortem lament.
Congratulations! Picking a winner out of all the great entries was not easy, but you won for three reasons.
One: Despite the clever title, it neither added nor took from the overall content. It was my own fault for not being specific enough in the rules, but I tried to ignore the titles as the entire idea should be encapsulated in the six words. As they were in yours.
Two: The gut emotional reaction that the story evoked was real and intense.
Three: The number of possibilities and ideas evoked. You have depression, a sense of mortality, a concern/contempt about the feelings of others, and a sense of ego.
This is great. Really, really great. One of those “sitting at my desk, drinking my coffee, checking out ficly, and then suddenly stopping to re-read it a few times because it’s all, ‘wow, that’s the perfect entry for this challenge’” and whatnot.
