Choices for the Chosen

The building shook as another mortar shell exploded nearby. Glass shattered below us. Another plume of smoke was rose into the air.

“We gotta do something soon or the whole city will be nothing but potholes.”

“Too late.” Adam muttered.

“Cute- you just earned youself frontline duty.” Blaine shot back.

“I’m not going out there.”

“Why not? You’re invulnerable.” The word still sounded funny when Blaine said it.

“Just because we haven’t found something that can hurt me doesn’t mean that nothing will. I’m not eager to test it against bullets and explosions.” Adam looked so thin that he verged on sickly. I still had a hard time believing that he couldn’t be hurt.

“Look we have these- these powers, we might as well use them. I mean, that was the plan right?” Blaine appealed to all of us.

I hummed the theme to Airwolf and the rest of the group began to nod in agreement, even Adam’s reluctance began to melt away.

Blaine knelt next to me and quietly whispered, “Stop it, Ian.”

“I was just trying to help.”
