Interesting – in my initial reading I thought it was about substance abuse. And yet the tags indicate cybernetics/cyborg, etc. So now, I’m not sure I understand what’s going on at all.

Oh man, that didn’t even occur to me! I wanted this story to be able to be about many things, to have the emotion there but not the specifics, and I’m so glad someone had a different take.

The cyborg is the premise I started with, that they are replacing themselves stage by stage with machinery. Though, don’t feel the need to take that literally, or at all.

If it helps I STILL don’t get the cyborg thing. This just looks like past relationships cropping up. Might well be an “eye of the beholder” scenario. Personally I prefer them that way!

I think that this is interesting, but perhaps a little too obscure to be wholly satisfying. As other commentators have noted, the tags do help to clarify what you’re driving at.
