The Legend of Johnny Irish #5

“What do you fight for?” Asks John between licks of his ice cream cone. He looks just as goofy as ever: still shirtless and in his training shorts, but wearing a leather jacket now. We are walking back to the gym.

“Myself”, I answer instantaneously. This was one of those stock questions that you get asked day one of boxing. Both the question and answer are ingrained into your head. You fight for yourself.

“Wrong answer”, John says. he licks at his ice cream once more and takes his time before continuing.

“Everyone fights for something”, he starts, “whether it’s for money, fame, or friendship; we all use boxing as a means for an end. We want to be somebody or go somewhere. That’s the problem with boxers these days, they don’t realize that they have something to prove”.

“Then what do you fight for?”

Who… did I fight for.” He bites into the cone.

“You sure you don’t want any?” He asks.

“I’m not hungry”.

We keep walking.
