I saw the prequel in a completely different light, so this is very interesting. I really like your interpretation and I like that you have repeated the ending, suggesting that it is this never ending flow of different relationships.
As the Author of the original, also in present tense throughout apart from the virtually identical last line, I would say that there is a passage of time within the last paragraph; And then (past)…changes (present)… If the changes had been changed, the for me it would be more problematic.
That little bit of ‘and then’ actually covers a huge gap that in a longer format would probably make up a couple of chapters.
