Escalation

Leah grabbed the branch saw and swung it around, keeping it between her the monster. “Stay away.”

The thing made a series of sucking noises before Leah realized that it was laughing at her. It rocked back and forth and something inside of all that flabby moist flesh gave the impression of uncoiling. She wanted to run but it was so fast. The thing had already chased her down twice. This time something new happened. Flesh stretched as it doubled in size and then doubled again. Finger-like tendrils wrenched free from the top and bloomed into two six-fingered hands.

Now she understood why it had laughed. The saw looked like it would do as much good as a toothpick, but it was all she had.

“I’ve seen worse.” Leah said defiantly. “Don’t make me hurt you.”

The thing quivered and spines sprouted in strange patterns, bristling out of the gelatinous form.

“Not fair.” Leah murmured. “What predators do you have?”

As the thing slithered closer, she decided that she really didn’t want the answer to that question.
