Mistakes on Duty

Agent Deveroll heard his phone buzz. His work phone.

“Deveroll here.” He spoke into the black device.

“Is the assignment complete?” A female voice purred into his ear.

“Yes. Subject terminated.” He replied as he shrugged on his backpack and headed outof his hotel room in Hong Kong.

Silence dragged on for a few minutes and confusion started to creep into this mind. He didn’t dare say a word out of turnor hang up so he patiently waited as made his way through the parking lot and to his black truck.

She spoke so suddenly that Deveroll was actually surprised, “I’m going to kill you.”

His blood ran cold. She wasn’t kidding. “Wh-what?”

Her voice was hard as cold steel, “How exactly did you kill the CEO?”

“Exactly how you wanted. I dropped a safe on him from the roof as he walked out.” Deveroll was bewildred.

“You idiot! I told you to keep him safe from snipers on the roof! Consider yourself a target!” The woman exploded in fury.

Deveroll hung up and floored it out to the freeway. He drove for the hills.
