True Love

I love you.

I’ve come to accept the fact that I can never tell you this. Some would say I should have seized my chance when I had it, but I don’t have any regrets. The time we’ve spent together will always be treasured. But our lives have different courses. I understand that now.

You climb into the carriage with your bride. A single tear slides down my cheek. You glance up and although I am far too high for you to see me on the dark palace balcony, my heart skips a beat. I step back.

The moment passes. The carriage moves slowly away through a swarm of well-wishers. As the carriage leaves the palace gates, the first floating lanterns are released on the breeze.

Others follow and soon the entire city is filled with the light. The lanterns rise into the night sky, beautiful and free. I remove the shade from a nearby lamp and use the candle to light my own lantern. I release it, along with my dreams. My heart is pierced with sadness – and filled with joy.

I am happy, knowing you are happy.

I love you.
