Not Taking This Seriously

“So you just sit here?” Maude whispered.

“Haven’t you ever been to a funeral?” Jeanette whispered back.

Maude rolled her eyes. “Duh, but I’ve never crashed one.”

“Shhh, we don’t want them to figure out we don’t belong. If anyone asks, tell them you and “Frankie” were intimate."

“He was like eighty!” Maude protested.

“I know.” Jeanette couldn’t shake the image of Maude and “Frankie” and started giggling.

Maude glared at Jeanette but laughter danced in her eyes. “I’m going to own this.” She raised her voice, “Old dudes need love too. You’re just jealous he loved me most!”

Both of them exploded into gales of full blown laughter.

“Goddamnit don’t ruin this.” Jeanette said between breaths.

It didn’t take long for the family to insist that the two women leave.

Maude wiped tears from her eyes. “Well, I’ve never been kicked out of a funeral before.”

Jeanette “Yeah, thanks a lot. Now we’ll miss the free food and all those tearful embraces.”

“Can I buy you a sandwhich and call it good?”

“I guess so.”
