Dangerous Boundaries: One Door Closes-

Sirach’s voice drifted over Lukas’ shoulder. “So Midden was expecting you but when he found Jearom asleep in your usual bed, he decided to make an example out of him?”

“That’s my guess, unless you’ve been hosting for many of the Changed lately.” Lukas replied. His glowing eyes finally fell on the shivering inn-keeper who was vigorously rubbing his arms with his hands. He quickly added, “I think I’ve gotten everything I’m going to get from here. Lock it up.”

“Very good, M’lord.” Sirach said, obviously relieved.

Lukas stepped into the hallway and waited for Sirach to lock up behind them. The old inkeep withdrew the ring of keys with shaking hands. He paused in the act of locking the door and looked up at Lukas. “Tomorrow, when you leave, do you think I could come with you?”

Lukas was taken back. “What about the inn?”

“Jearom’s murder changed everything. I can’t live here any more. The people around here are naturally suspicious folk and no one will want to help someone that got one of their own killed.”
