A Swiss Watch: A Novel Idea
Breucker reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a dime store novel. It was a poor book, Ein Spaziergang um Mitternacht, but it gave him something to do while he waited. Anyone who noticed him would realize – but no, the book made them never stop to notice him.
He loved the way a Swiss novelist (he could only imagine a poor, starving artist) would spell out the most ridiculous of situations in the most melancholy words.

Die melancholie, Breucker thought.
