I think the last exchange is especially telling, that the hobbies are not allowed to be simply hobbies. They have to be lucrative. A fair amount of self-denial in that.
You’re saying she should be happy with her hobbies and not make them into something bigger than they are. She is exploring her options, trying to find her niche, and sometimes hobbies provide a means to that end, with happiness to boot. shrug
