Telephone Lines
But he will always
be on the other end of
the phone,
the receiver pressed
tightly
into his ear as if that
might somehow bring
us closer,
make the time pass
with a little
more ease.
His eyes will droop,
and so will mine,
and
our words will slur
and the mundane
will turn to miracles.
But there will be a time
right before we meet again,
and doubts have clouded
our otherwise logical minds.
We will ask dumb questions
over the phone
that brought us solace
this year:
Do you miss me
Do you love me
Do you want to see me
And we will hear
the smile in each other’s voice
as we
say,
“I do,
I do,
I definitely do.”
