Bittersweet Nights In The Midwest

We waited in the sweltering sun,
tiny beads of sweat
rolling gracefully down our bare arms.
We hopped on the bus
that would surely take us somewhere
new.
We sat down and it hit us.
The smell, quite pungent,
lingered in the stale air.
It was one of those days,
we surmised.

But later,
we ran through campus
without a care in the world,
arms outstretched as if we
could fly,
sprinting against the chilly
night air.

I wasn’t thinking about
home so much
anymore.
