Builders

I was there on the night it all came crashing down
around us
all of the years we’d carefully piled
one on the other
mortared with sacrifice and tears
and blood

We were builders, you and I,
You built and
I built
And everything tried to knock it down
And almost did, time and again

Our creation wobbled often
It shivered under the weight
Pieces fell off and tumbled to our feet
And we often despaired
Only to start again, hope in our eyes
Convinced it could last a lifetime
Despite any evidence to support our dream.

But I was there on the night it all came crashing down

We were builders, you and I
You built, and
I built, and
You built, and
I built, and
You built, and
I built, and
You built, and…

It was a bit of surprise to see, at the end,
That we hadn’t been using the same blueprint.
