Messenger: Flesh and Blood

I stretched out a hand, to which 19 flew silently. Barely a click of gear teeth registered his landing.

“That’s why I’m sending Four and Nineteen. If anything goes wrong, one of them can escort Tallis to safety while the other keeps looking.”

Keeper snorted in disbelief while even Rokhin looked a little uncertain. A quick glance out of the nearest window made it easy to see why; the snowdrifts were by now several feet deep and the visibility so low that one would struggle to see two feet, lantern or not.

But that was why I would be sending Tallis. He had been part of some truly spectacular rescues before, and between him and the two Gearwings (and their ability to sense heat from some distance away) they represented Kourser’s best chance of being found before it was too late.

“You aren’t going to send a bird out in this weather. It’s basically a death sentence!”

I turned aside and spoke the orders into the message medallion. Gearwing Nineteen took the medallion and chirped at Four, and they were away.
