At the end

So there we sat, up on the roof looking out over the city. Listening to the screaming the crying and the laughter. Occasionally another building would burst into flames and I winced.
I felt her hand in mine tense as a piercing cry rang out and I wonder if we’d do it take the quick way out, six floors straight down, or if we’d wait until the end.
“You know.” she said “I didn’t really believe it would happen.”
“I know.” I replied, my voice catching, almost a sob “I thought it would be like the stories, some last minute day saving”
“Well, we do have a few more minutes, so it might still happen.” she looked at me, smiling as tears rolled down her face.
I took hold of her cheeks and kissed her. Down below people killed and prayed and screwed and fought but I was here with her and I couldn’t think of anything else I rather do than kiss her.
