Wonderful imagery and word choice—the mystery of his actions makes me ask if it’s madness or some greater symbolic significance (actually that’s more my analytical laziness at the moment). The auto-dialogue works well, and your penchant for preposition placement adds a nice archaic tone for which I hold great admiration.
I’ve always liked stories about madness, especially ones that have loneliness as a component. The Titan suggests a greek connection but it’s hard to tell for sure. If it is Greek, then my question is where did the rest of the gods go? Interesting. Very interesting.
Sorry I missed you out. I was aware of it – was working my way down the list but that was taking ages so then I started from the bottom and the bell went. Anyway…
I like the tone of the entire piece. It’s a challenge to write with such a distinctive ‘fantasy’ voice, and you manage it very naturally. I enjoyed the use of present tense as well (everyone knows it’s my fave).
As for the plot itself – the ficly stands very well alone: encapsulating one moment while telling a longer story about the god.
For such a brutal character, I felt quite a lot of sympathy for him. The bitterness of being forgotten stood out more than his madness to me. Interesting though – I don’t think I would have defined him as a god without your label. He has the physical strength/power but little intelligence. And surely a god is only a god as long as they are worshiped.
Overall, a great ficly which I enjoyed very much =) Thanks for entering the challenge!!
It’s not, actually — at least, not deliberately. This is a different sort of god, and the titans in this universe are of a different sort, as well. There are also golems, sorceresses, and a lot of other beings you won’t find in Greek mythology. I’m glad you liked the story, though! :)
Bizarre little story. I liked it, and it read well. I have no idea where it could go or from whence it came, but that’s okay. Mostly I just like the imagery of this giant deity sucking on thumb.
I, too, liked the “like grass” image. Ah, we’re all allowed to be lonely, but we must control the outward expression of our emotions, lest we go about ripping up mountains…
Great pictures, good mystery; asks all the right questions to get the audience wanting more.
I tried finding the other story. I gave up. Kinda convinced myself it was ‘Worldbreaker’ for a time, but then I questioned whether or not you’re the kind of writer who’d write about the same universe in two completely different times. Just tell me what it is, maybe?
The bit with putting the bone in his mouth made me think of a dog. It was a weird image of a giant Jackal rummaging through mountains for old bones.
This was actually very well written, despite implications of caninity, and thoroughly enjoyable to boot. Still wanna know what the story was.
That’s kind of interesting, actually, considering I’m not really a fan Tad’s work. I always found him too verbose and meandering, and I’ve never been able to finish one of his books (and believe me, I tried).
So we have Sorcerers, Golems, Titans and Gods. Is there a pecking order? I like the idea of the thumb-bone of a Titan. Somehow I thought the figure described in this ficly was the Golem from the first story. And that the thumb-bone was a key to waking the Titan. Very compelling read.
In terms of physical size, the gods are certainly the largest, with titans below, and golems at the bottom. (And there are almost certainly other entities that fall in at other places in that continuum, as well.)
In terms of powers and abilities, well, it wouldn’t be interesting if there wasn’t some competition there. :)
