Honest and effortless sounding, candid and… what’s an antonym for contrived? Eh, it’s natural, conversational. Sounds like a situation that is best to move on from, and as the reader I want it to be realized, but there’s nothing truly conclusive or definite in the repetition of ‘I think we were always wrong’ — it’s like a general bad feeling about something rather than an outright refusal of it.

I really liked the pace of this and the subtle rhyme. This person has obviously gotten under your skin and stayed there. I’m no guru but it seems to me that they didn’t deserve you or they would’ve tried harder. Or maybe it was you? But from what I gather from your pieces it was more likely they messed up.
