Defense Mechanism
It would do nearly anything, as long as it was unpleasant, to an intruder. It could detect how the unwanted visitor was coming, what he or she was carrying, and even smell if they were afraid. It was silent and efficient and it could make you really dead.
One might be tempted to call it a robot. Certainly it was in large part a mechanism. But it was smart. Well, mostly, but of course it behaved based on the rules you gave it. You had to be pretty careful with those. A dumb order would produce a dumb action.
Saved my life, it did, a good number of times. Good thing, too. Nobody else could have shut it off. Would have been a devil of a time getting it off the idiot who tried to get in. Well, for a while, at least; after the idiot was dead it would be easy, but then it would be after the doctor probably. Stubborn as a mule.
They were pricey, but now things have progressed, and now they’re more reasonable.
