Tallis's Canon: An Homage
Sir Thomas Tallis, wondrous soul,
Did love the world; he loved it whole,
And all he loved, he’d celebrate;
He’d sing of beauty, and create
Enchanting music from his mind.
The melodies would wrap and wind
Until they formed a spiral chain
That ended; then began again.
A single voice began to sing,
Soon followed by another’s. Rings
Of lovely music coiled round
And filled all Heav’n with glorious sound,
Until the singer reach’d the end
And chased its tail, and chased his friend.
Was he a saint? Perhaps he was.
His Canon echo’d. It still does.
