Tearing the bandage off

Thomas had been in love; had been writing a story in chapters about the time when he would meet his beloved in person, since this was a bit of an online romance. Then one day, suddenly, things went awry, as things are apt to do. The whole relationship was turned off, mid-fantasy. Two chapters were done; the third was in progress at the time.
The better part of a year later, with no further contact with the former friend, Thomas took it into his mind to share this story with friends, first taking the precaution of changing the characters’ names. However, that would have to include an ending to the story, which originally was going to have five chapters. Since the friendship had broken, Thomas had already come up with a suitably heartbreaking ending, abrupt and painful, reflecting his own feelings on the disillusionment he had undergone.
This ending was not yet written out, and he started to type out the MS for chapter 3. How would the characters actually behave when the end was due?
Hope hadn’t died, you see.
