I Was Alice, Once

You pushed me further and further
into your bedsheets
that night
(and not that I minded:
they were quite warm)
I tumbled down the rabbit hole
beneath your mattress,
free falling within the gentle waters
caressing my bare skin.
My mind wanted to fear
the darkness around the
edges of my vision,
but the soothing waves made
me think otherwise.
Once I reached the bottom,
I began my swim back to the surface.
My body broke the barrier,
and you,
always you with your slow and
steady smile and your
warm eyes,
held out your hand
and took me again.
