this guy’s sort of unable to accept the truth, i.e. in I and IV he’s still instructing the reader to do what presumably he has been doing, yet he does it as a result of being unable to cope, and being the weaker, not the stronger.
Not necessarily jilted, I saw II , VI and VII to be ambiguous, i.e. it’s not necessarily an old lover, perhaps a friend or even a stranger, a fellow druggie. With V it becomes as though this guy’s trying to get more people to embrace his lifestyle, as though it’s a symbol of strength, although he seems weak and unable to cope with whatever he’s running from, only to receive a sudden moment of clarity in VII and perhaps VIII when he recognizes how he’s been leading his life, and his own weakness.
