Sandcastle Steady

It was a perfect day
The sky bright
The clouds white
The sand soft beneath our feet
Our hands were clasped
Swinging together
In flawless, faultless harmony
It was a perfect day
Except for me

My mind had fluttered far beyond
The time in which I stood
It lay broken
Trapped within
A cage of what ifs and whens and shoulds
My body bowed beneath the pressure
Placing panic in my smile
I watched your eyes grow dim, uncertain
And our hands fall to our sides

Soon enough the day had ended
And it was time to say goodbye
For I knew your “See you later”
Meant “Well, at least we tried”
