Another Room (Day 18)

“And what makes you think that you would be good for this Employment?” A small woman asked, without looking up from the sheet of references the interviewee had handed her.

“I have a high threshold for pain. I am also very healthy.” The interviewee said with a smile. She was wringing her hands under the table.

“I see. And do you become emotionally attached easily?” The small woman asked, her eyes now scrutinizing the interviewee’s face.

She faltered, “Ah, no. I don’t think so. May I ask why that is relevant?”

“Well, we can’t have you becoming emotionally attached to the future of a community. That would be selfish on your part and irresponsible on our part for hiring you.”

“Oh. Okay. Well, I wouldn’t become emotionally attached.”

“Alright. And how old did you say you are?”

“Sixteen.”

The woman’s eyebrows arched, “So young?”

“I am physically qualified for the job and I need the money.” The girl explained with a shrug.

“Well, go join the rest of the women. The orientation will begin shortly.”
